#12 Synchronicities are meaning patterns

We’ve all had these moments in life where we might be thinking or daydreaming about something or someone, and then we see a reflection of it out in the world. Or our paths cross with a person that was on our mind. Or we may have had a chance meeting with someone, a quick chat, and a new piece of information lands in our lap that leads down a new path.

Most people would think it’s coincidence, but in those rare moments, that random chance of information about that new path or opportunity, changed your direction and your life completely.

Steve Jobs has famously quoted: "You can't connect the dots looking forward… You can only connect them looking backward. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something -- your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life."

Carl Jung, a Swiss psychiatrist and psychologist who founded analytical psychology, spent many years studying the principles of synchronicity and how that signaling is an uncanny way our inner world starts to align perfectly with our outer world experiences.

Jung coined the term “synchronicity” to “explain a relationship between two events which could not be explained by cause and effect.”

Working with his clients over the years, he was able to understand that patterns and symbols were a way the world is reflecting back to us our nature. But first we need to understand internally what’s being communicated to us. In cultural traditions, signs in the material world were very important to read and be used as guidance to take the next steps.

Experiencing synchronicity can tell us we’re in alignment with natural law and order. We’re moving at a frequency where we can pick up visions of moments before they’re happening as they’re already in motion.

He is also credited for applying this unique circumstance of cause and effect into a quantum physics theory. Without going too deep, he collaborated with another physicist and came up with the principle of “acasual parallelism” where a "meaningful coincidence of two or more events where something other than the probability of chance is involved".

Basically, this phenomena has been discussed seriously to leverage and apply these principles in our everyday lives.

It’s also a similar experience when we’re in the natural motions of creative insights and spiritual ah-has thoughts.

Jung also thought it was up to us to interpret the meaning as they are unique and individual to each of us. Similar to dreams, the details are what matter the most to clarify any meaning. He felt these “coincidences” were tied to an individual’s reality and are guideposts to offer directional insight. Not only would this show that you are on the right path, but these messages would also offer a deeper meaning. It would offer depth about where you’ve been and what’s to come.

We are indeed creators. We come with a built-in internal language so that our unconscious mind can carry messages into the consciousness. We have the ability to bring inspirational ideas into tangible empires.

The world starts to look more like a simulation based on the reality I choose to live. The way I view life gets reflected back to me. So, it makes sense to do and be the things you love.

It’s a philosophy of life. And a way of choosing how you want to approach living.

The idea is that by wanting to live a fulfilling life, both the internal and external worlds need to be turned on and used together.

“If I’m not living by purpose, I’m living by accident.” - Malka Schulweis

Therefore, there are two lenses to view the world:

  1. I don’t have any intentions about my life, it’s all random.

  2. I’m connected to the universe and everything is resonant.

“I don’t have intentions”, could also look like:

  • I’m not sure what I want, and I don’t know where to begin

  • I don’t know what I truly desire

  • I doubt I can have what I want, is it really for me?

When we can find that internal why of what lights us, even if it’s one word, to anchor us to what we know inside, we start turning on that internal compass. We want to connect with our internal wisdom to guide us.

“I’m connected”, could also look like:

  • I may not know all the details, but I have an idea

  • I want to expand myself and experience my potential

  • I know I can have what I want

Meaningful Coincidences

Pay attention to the patterns. Jung felt that anyone could strengthen their ability to heighten their awareness to recognize synchronistic events by training themselves. In my experience, it becomes a matching game, in a way.

Whatever insights or images that come into my mind’s eye or questions I have, I’ll see the answer or the repetition of something as a guide. One thing we know collectively, the study of all consciousness is the final frontier into understanding human consciousness and behavior. Since we all interpret and perceive based on our own set of knowledge, my reality will always be unique to me.

Ways to recognize signs

  • You hear a word or phrase you were thinking about or about to write

  • You see repeating numbers and symbols like an eagle

  • Meeting people who give you the information you need

  • Seeing your thoughts reflected out into the world

Carl Jung’s path to self-development and discovery continues to offer guidance. When life becomes illuminated, it transforms into magic.

Be able to recognize everyday experiences when they happen. I created an intuitive journal that focuses on documenting synchronicities and developing those events into personal data.
